One from the "Golden Age of Hip-Hop". I have to say that whilst I'm not a huge fan of Hip-Hop, at least what passes today for Hip-Hop, there was a moment in time when there were actually quite a few things of the Hip-Hop variety that I really enjoyed - KRS-One, Public Enemy, Mantronix, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LL Cool J, Doug E. Fresh, 3rd Bass, Roxanne Shante, Gang Starr, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Afrika Bambata, Cookie Crew, A Tribe Called Quest, EPMD - well that's actually more than a few things! Anyway before it went daft and everyone thought they were gangstas and that every girl was a ho, there was actually some really interesting stuff around and Eric B and Rakim fitted right into that bunch of new sounds.

Eric B demonstrated a bit of a different style of Rapping prefering a more laid back approach of delivery as compared to the attack the Mic form of someone like Public Enemy for instance. It set him apart a bit and of course after the release of this album there were a lot more imitators.

The single 'I Know You Got Soul' suddenly made James Brown a popular person to sample and M/A/R/R/S (featuring CJ MacIntosh on the turntables along with Dave Dorrell) sampled the phrase 'Pump Up The Volume' to great effect by having a hit record that took the #1 spot for two weeks back in 1987.
