The Horrible Crowes
This is quite possibly the album of the year. I know there are other contenders, my own list includes 'Red Barked Tree' by Wire, 'England Sreaming' by The Hi-Fi Spitfires, 'Content' by Gang of Four, 'England Keep My Bones' by Frank Turner, and 'Walk The Walk, Talk the Talk' by The Headcat (just a few that could easily take the title of Best of the Year).
We all know Brian Fallon from The Gaslight Anthem and over the past couple of years they have produced some fascinating music so it was interesting to see him step out into a side project with his guitar tech Ian Perkins. You think about that for a moment...his guitar tech! Sounds like there is no hope that an album by that combination is going to work. But it does. Classic Rock Magaaine's Sian Llewellyn said that it is an album that is"steeped in sublime, gentle beauty." I heartily agree.
There are tracks that would seem to sit well in the canon of The Gaslight Anthem, and it's hard not to think of them when listening to the album. But last years 'American Slang' album, whilst good, did not feel like a good body of work and had it's brilliance in patches. 'Elsie' though sounds brilliant all the way through and feels like a complete work.
If you haven't heard it yet, I urge you, if you only get one more album this year, make it this one!
